Paul & Jean Mooring Slide Collection

Paul & Jean Mooring

Summary

Paul and Jean Mooring have been involved with the Illinois Prairie Path for over four decades, beginning in 1965. Jean was an avid photographer and, with their interest in the Path, documented the Path over this time span. Their slide collection documents decades of development, issues and growth of the Illinois Prairie Path.

Biographical Sketch

Paul and Jean Mooring volunteered for the Illinois Prairie Path beginning as charter members at the first Annual Meeting in 1965. Over more than four decades of involvement, the Moorings both served in crucial roles of the organization. Paul was President of the Board of Directors from 1972-1993 and Jean was the Newsletter editor from 1980-1996. Both continued on as active Board Members and volunteers. Jean passed away in 2013.

Over the years, the Moorings worked on every Earth Day cleanup and most prairie burns, installing benches, drinking fountains, logo signs and display case stands (designed and made in kit form by Paul in their backyard), steps on steep embankments and numerous other work projects.

Before 1986, Jean directed most of the limestone surfacing projects done for the IPP. During Paul's presidency, the IPP built multiple bridges over East and West Branches of the DuPage River and the Volunteer Bridge in downtown Wheaton.

Scope & Content Note

Paul and Jean Mooring have been involved with the Illinois Prairie Path for over four decades. Jean was an avid photographer and documented the Path over this time span. These slides represent decades of development, issues, and growth of the IPP. The slides are arranged in four groups, reflecting the Mooring's original organization

Series 1: Indexed Slides

The Indexed Slides are arranged chronologically and include 1986 and 1995 through 2005. Handwritten indexes were created by the Moorings and are included at the beginning of each year. The indexed slides include images related to all aspects of the IPP - construction, amenities, challenges, flora, events, and trail conditions and use in all seasons.

Series 2: Topical Slides

The Topical Slides are arranged alphabetically by subject. These slides represent decades of development, issues, and growth of the IPP. The actual subject designation was created by the Archives, building roughly on categories used by the Moorings. The categories created include: Amenities, Bridges, DuPage Water Pipeline, Events, IPP Acceptance, Maintenance and Issues, Outings, People, Prairies, Trail, Trail Users, and Wildflowers.

Series 3: Slideshows

This series contains slideshows used by the Illinois Prairie Path. The annual slideshows (1984-2005) were a presentation that the Moorings did at each annual members meeting and highlight the happenings on the Path throughout the year. Prior to 1996, there are scripts only with no corresponding slides within this series. From 1996-2005, the series contains both the script and the slides in order.

In addition to the annual highlight slideshows, there are several subject slideshows about the IPP, specifically, Volunteer Bridge, Saga of a Bridge (over the East Branch of the DuPage River), and two more general historical/promotional slideshows. Two additional copyright protected slideshows were apparently used by the IPP Board, although the purpose is unclear.

Series 4: Eugene Lewis Slides

Eugene Lewis was a long-time volunteer of the Illinois Prairie Path, serving as the chairman of the planning committee. From 1968-1980, he took pictures of the progress along the path. Mr. Lewis donated his IPP-related photographs to Paul Mooring. The numberical number organization system was created by Lewis; an index by individual slide number makes the system readily accessible.

Processing Notes & Access

All of the slides were donated by Paul Mooring to the North Central College Archives in 2014 to supplement the Illinois Prairie Path Collection donation. The slides were received in either slide boxes or in carousel trays, and have been rehoused into archival slide sleeves and placed in archival document cases to balance preservation with usability of the collection.

Illinois Prairie Path Archives

The Illinois Prairie Path Archives correlates to the Mooring Slide Collection, although they are two separate collections due to provenance.

Series 1: Mooring Slide Collection: Illinois Prairie Path Indexed Slides, 1986, 1995-2005

Amount: 4 Boxes

Arrangement: Chronological

Restrictions: None

Description:

Paul and Jean Mooring have been involved with the Illinois Prairie Path for over four decades. Jean was an avid photographer and, with their interest in the Path, documented the Path over this time span. These slides represent decades of development, issues and growth of the IPP.

This series of slides were housed in slide trays in chronological order by year and indexed by the Moorings with a handwritten list. It is unclear whether this storage system superceded a previous subject-based system for easier access. Given that it is handwritten, the index is not keyword searchable and the 1986 slides do not have an index available. The indexed slides include images related to all aspects of the IPP – construction, amenities, challenges, flora, events, and trail conditions and use in all seasons.

Additional Resources:

It is possible that the Topical Slides series in this Collection are the earlier (pre-1995) slides and this is the later series.

Processing Note:

The slide carousels received included both personal and IPP-related slides. The IPP-related slides were removed from the slide trays by archives staff and each was numbered and dated according to the index written by the Moorings. The personal slides were returned to Paul Mooring.

Series 2: Mooring Slide Collection: Illinois Prairie Path Topical Slides

Amount: 10 Boxes

Arrangement: Alphabetical by Subject

Restrictions: None

Description:

Paul and Jean Mooring have been involved with the Illinois Prairie Path for over four decades. Jean was an avid photographer and, with their interest in the Path, documented the Path over this time span. These slides represent decades of development, issues and growth of the IPP. The actual subject order was created by Archives staff and the slides were fit into this system. The categories created were: Amenities, Bridges, DuPage Water Pipeline, Events, IPP Acceptance, Maintenance and Issues, Outings, People, Prairies, Trail, Trail Users, and Wildflowers.

It is possible that the Moorings kept their slides by subject arrangements prior to the mid1990s and then switched to a chronological and indexed list, but the dates are unclear enough that we cannot definitively state this to be fact.

Processing Note:

The slides were removed from plastic boxes with contents handwritten on top and rehoused into archival slide sleeves. In order to retain the information provided by the Moorings, photocopies of the box lids were made and placed in the front of the subject folders.

Additional Resources:

These subjects, and in fact, perhaps some slides originally taken with these subject slides, are represented in the annual slideshow as well as in the indexed slide collections as well.

Series 3: Slideshows

Amount: 2 Boxes

Arrangement: Alphabetical

Restrictions: Two of the slideshows are copyright protected

Description:

This series contains slideshows used by the Illinois Prairie Path. The annual slideshows were a presentation that the Moorings did at each annual members meeting and highlight the happenings on the Path throughout the year. Prior to 1996, there are scripts only with no corresponding slides within this series. From 1996-2005, the series contains both the script and the slides in order.

Following the Annual Slideshow folders are several other complete slide shows. Several are of the Illinois Prairie Path specifically – the volunteer bridge, Saga of a Bridge, and two untitled/promotional slide shows. Two additional slide shows were apparently used by the IPP Board, although the purpose is unclear. These are the two copyright protected shows within the collection.

Additional Records:

These items were largely received in slide carousels and transferred to archival slide sleeves by archives staff.

It is possible that the slides for the scripts only prior to 1996 could be identified in the Topical Slides series, but such a project is beyond our scope.

Series 4: Eugene Lewis Illinois Prairie Path Slide Collection, 1968-1980

Amount: 1 Box

Arrangement: Numerical

Restrictions: None

Description:

Eugene Lewis was a long-time volunteer of the Illinois Prairie Path, serving as the chairman of the planning committee. From 1968-1980, he took pictures of the progress along the path. Mr. Lewis donated his IPP-related photographs to Paul Mooring. The numerical number organization system was created by Lewis; an index by individual slide number makes the system readily accessible.

The subjects and events included mirror those in the other Mooring series, but because the slides are by a different creator, they are maintained separately.
