Heatherton Estate was the home of Judge John S. Goodwin, a Naperville lawyer and judge. Judge Goodwin was instrumental in the growth of the College in the early 20th century. He arranged an introduction to Andrew Carnegie, which resulted in the construction of Carnegie Library, Goldspohn Hall, and the Boilerhouse. He was also credited for securing the first athletic field for the College, the block south of Naperville's 5th Avenue train station (now a city park).
