Dr. James Breasted received his Ph.D. from the University of Berlin in 1894, the first American to do so. He joined the faculty at the University of Chicago in 1894 as the first to teach Egyptology in the United States. In 1919, with the assistance of John D. Rockefeller, Dr. Breasted founded the Oriental Institute. Dr. Breasted led several expeditions to Egypt, returning with many artifacts for display and research use at the Institute.
